Mang Alfred's thoughts on Jeepney Modernization

With the looming threat of the jeepney modernization, we took the opportunity to ask Mang Alfred about his thoughts on the issue of jeepney modernization, and this is what he had to say: “Ayokong i-consolidate ang prangkisa (of jeepney drivers) sa isang kooperatiba.”

He further goes on explaining what the modernization will entail, losing control over the drivers’ own jeepneys, which directly signifies a lesser flow of income and lesser rights. He says that if the modernization does come to fruition, jeepney drivers will be more like chauffeurs as they lose ownership of their own jeepneys, basically just driving governmentally issued vehicles that will be handed down to them.

“Mawawalan ng rights ang mga may sariling linya dahil gobyerno na ang may hawak ng lahat,” Mang Alfred states. As a driver of more than 20 years, Mang Alfred’s jeepney has served as a loyal companion to him through his ups and downs.
